This decade is proving to be the greatest devastation for Syrian people, missiles have been flying in the sky, multi-parties huge gunfight on the ground has been going on, millions of people have died, millions of them are forced to live homelessly, almost half of the population have been crossed the Mediterranean to beg for refugee status in Europe. The reason behind this apocalypse was the protestation against the Assad Regime to bring in democratic reform in the country, this leads to widespread conflict in Syria, and this helped ISIS to find its space. The presence of ISIS in Syria had invited foreign players to intervene, Russian entered to support President Assad, an ally to Russia, to fight against ISIS, and intervention led by the United States was to unseat Assad and to eradicate ISIS from the Middle East. The humanity is being bombed every day, at least 10 countries/coalition have been doing airstrikes in Syria, the United States-led coalition, Russia, Israel, and Turkey are the major countries which have been storming the Syrian military and civilian establishment, and as a result all kinds of infrastructure, road, rails, hospitals, schools, colleges have been demolished.
Syria is a beautiful, historic, oldest civilization and mineral-rich country, have now been destroyed, the fight has been going on in whole country including its capital, the major cities, Aleppo, Damascus, Idlib, Tartus, Latakia, etc have been demolished. The Syrian people are living under the greatest uncertainty and fear, fear of getting bombed, uncertainty of getting killed in the next moment by the airstrikes, half of the population has been forced to flee the country and has been asking for refugee status in the foreign country, the people has been struck in the multi-lateral war. Syrian are the unfortunate people on the planet, they are the part of proxy war of superpowers, there are many stakeholders in Syrian civil war who actually shares no stake, they are fighting to earn the dominance in the Middle East.
Syrian conflict was started as an uprising for democracy, a small group of people had been protesting against the government to bring in democratic reform in 2011, they were suppressed with great cruelty by the establishment, it forced the peaceful protestor to change its courses, they had been started arming itself and called on Syrian for liberation from the repressive regime. The instability had invited ISIS to strengthen its position in Syria to spread its caliphate from Iraq to Syria, this further complicated the Syrian civil war, ISIS not just threatened the people but it also threatened the government of Syria. President Assad, who was looking to consider the people’s concerns for liberalization, had been facing the risk of losing its power to ISIS as it was encircled by thousands of fighters from Iraq and other parts of the world. The deteriorating situation in Syria forced its government to call for intervention by its close ally Russia and Iran. They are the only countries who are legitimately fighting in Syria and in favor of Syrian people.
Russian military intervention in Syria had not gone well with western ally in 2015, they were started reaching to Mediterranean with aircraft carrier and military equipment on the name of fighting ISIS in Syria, and they had accused Syrian government of using chemical weapons against their own people and punished Syria with huge number of sanctions. United States and its allies had started arming the rebels in Syria to fight against the Assad regime and ISIS, and supported them with their ground troops, and in the process US have stationed 2000 troops for consultation and training. Iran along with Shia militia Hezbollah came to rescue President Bashar Al Assad, a Shia regime, its action was seen as an aggression by Sunni states Saudi Arabia and Turkey and they started supporting US-led coalition to unseat Assad. The growing influence of Iran in Iraq, Syria and Lebanon helped Israel to feel threatened, so it started airstrike in Syria to destroy Iranian and Hezbollah bases, Israel air forces did at least 100 airstrikes. The US-led coalition has been supporting Kurds in the eastern Syria and treats it as an ally, but Turkey treats Kurds as militant and started airstrike against them especially in Afrin. Turkey declared a war on Kurds, and it started Operation Olive to free the Kurd’s held territory without taking any permission from the authorized government.
Meanwhile throughout the event, Russia stays committed to defend President Assad, transferred military technology, and stationed anti-missile defense system S-400 to protect the Syrian airspace which helped the US and its allies to stop an invasion of Syria. Syrian government along with Russia has defeated ISIS in the country but there is huge territory, is still being governed by Kurds and other rebels. The US does the airstrike to strengthen the position of rebels, they had attacked Syrian military bases sites in April 2017 and 2018, accusing Assad for a chemical attack against their own citizens.
The interventions by the Allies, Israel, and Turkey are illegal, and it breaches international laws as they are undermining the sovereignty of Syria and the Syrian people. The accusation of the chemical attack by Syrian government has not been proven, it is not yet clear whether it was done by government or by rebels, attacking Syria without proven investigation by the authority is reckless and irresponsible, it doesn’t point towards the right intention of the United States and allies. The airstrikes by US, UK, and France do not even wait for an investigation by the UN designated agency, they went against the UN Security Council, and even they did not follow their own government’s code of conduct as they need approval from the Congress before attacking another country.
People of Syria defeated ISIS, but now they are trapped by superpowers, this is the real challenge for them, superpowers are there to stay and destroy, and they are serving their own interest not the interest of Syria. The war could have ended long before if superpowers had not been intervening. The peace is unlike until they stay there.
